To help avoid foreclosure "Rescue Scams" check out these excellent public service announcements by the NeighborWorks America Pacific District.
Provide free counseling for borrowers who are having trouble making
their mortgage payments. Help borrowers understand their budget issues,
the mortgage details and the process of foreclosure and their rights
during the process. When appropriate, and at the borrower’s request,
enter into negotiations with their lender to modify their current loan
so that they can become current on their loans and afford to pay the
mortgage into the foreseeable future.

Eligibility: Anyone interested in improving knowledge and skill concerning the home
buying process. Some grant programs and affordable mortgage programs
require that participants meet the following requirements:
- Be a first-time homebuyer: Anyone who has not owned a home or has not owned a home in the past 3 years.
- Is 80% or less of the Area Median Income as defined by HUD or the Mortgage Revenue Bond income guidelines.
- Other as determined by specific grant or affordable mortgage program.
